Last week Buffalo Rising broke the news about Billy Club, a new restaurant and cocktail bar that’s going into the first floor of the historic Puritan building in Allentown. Billy Club is the brainchild of Dan Hagen and Jake Strawser, two local dudes who have plenty of experience in the restaurant and bar industry.
I’ve had the pleasure of checking out the site before major construction starts and talking to both Dan and Jake about their plans for the space. They plan on opening a casual, quiet place where patrons can enjoy a good cocktail and a nice meal. While their expertise is in the cocktail/drink world, they want the food to be just as impressive. They are thinking a simple menu, with a good selection of small plates and a couple larger entrees. At the moment, they are planning on offering Dinner service Monday through Saturday with the kitchen staying open until at least 11pm (possibly later on the weekends).
Since both Jake and Dan are big fans of whiskey, expect to see a bar with a heavy focus on whiskey but with quality craft spirits for folks who want something different. The cocktail menu will be a blend of originals and classics. Beer fans will be able to enjoy four brews on tap with several other craft brews available in cans.
They are currently working to transform this first floor space into a hip, contemporary restaurant and bar. The bar will seat 14 and will have a sharp quartz bar top. The dining room will seat another 24 at a mix of wooden tables and bench seating. The front of the restaurant will feature a ledge at their large window, customers will be able to sit/stand and people watch on Allen (always entertaining). The restaurant will feature calm globe lighting throughout, they will not be following the trend of Edison light bulbs. Their goal is to refinish the current wooden floors, which are the original floors from 1893.
Over the coming months, we’ll keep up with the construction progress and take a bunch of pictures. If you’re looking for an example of what to expect, check out our previous coverage of Oshun, Marble + Rye, Hydraulic Hearth and Toutant. In a sea of PBR cans and shots of Crown, Billy Club sounds like the more mature cocktail bar and restaurant that Allentown so desperately needs. I’m really excited about what this place could be, I wish I still lived around the corner.
