A couple months ago we were contacted by Perry’s Ice Cream and were invited to be part of their “Insider Scoop” program, along with a couple other bloggers from the region. Naturally, we were really excited. I think it goes without saying that both Alli and myself are big ice cream fans and were excited that a company like Perry’s wanted to work with us. We’ve long been fans of their ice cream and thankfully it’s near impossible to find a local scoop shop in the area that doesn’t serve Perry’s.
Last week I arrived home to find a box with dry ice at my front door. Inside was Perry’s Apple Pie and Pumpkin Pie flavors, two of their limited releases (available October through December) that are currently on shelves. I personally had not tried either of the flavors before and was skeptical of how tasty a Pumpkin Ice cream could be. Normally, I limit my Pumpkin intake to delicious Pumpkin Ale’s (Dogfish, Southern Tier); I don’t even like actual Pumpkin Pie.
I brought the pints into work and decided that we’d have an impromptu ice cream party, which my co-workers were very happy with. Both flavors went over very well and several of my coworkers came back for seconds. The Apple Pie had small pieces of apple, a good cinnamon flavor and small pieces of pie crust that gave each spoonful a nice crunch. The Pumpkin Pie surprised me, I liked the brown sugar flavor. Pieces of crust and the whip cream streaks really added a nice contrast. The winner, according to my co-workers, was the Pumpkin Pie, which seemed to take a lot of people by surprise.
Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll have some access to some of their new flavors and will also be trying out some of their classics. We’ll post some pictures, information and anything else we can think of. Just last weekend Tom and I made the trip out to their Akron facility to record a podcast with Perry’s Executive Vice President Brian Perry. That podcast will be coming in the next couple of weeks, so keep on the look out!
