Food Porn: Marco’s Italian Deli (Maple Rd)

Since I obviously talk to a lot of people about food and do the occasional research, I was already aware of the good reputation Marco’s Deli and Fine Dining Italian Restaurant had in Buffalo.  Chef/Owner Marco Sciortino has even been a challenger in a Nickel City Chef challenge during Season 2, so I know he takes his food seriously.  But the Williamsville Deli is located in a relatively plain looking plaza, so I didn’t even notice it until about a month ago.  Over the last two weeks I’ve taken two lunch trips over to Marco’s on Maple Road to grab lunch.  On my last trip I brought along my coworker Kristina who was very impressed with my leftovers from my first lunch.

Quick Info

Walking into Marco’s Deli on Maple can be somewhat intimidating if you don’t know what your going to order.  It’s not on the same level of shock/awe you have when you first see Johnny C’s 48 different sandwiches, but on a given day you’ll find 10+ specials being offered along with their regular Deli menu.  Luckily for both Kristina and I, their Muffaletto sandwich (pictured below) was one of those specials.  This was a sandwich made for 2 people to share.  Instead of a conventional roll this sandwich was made with a large 10″ circular dough panini.  Cut into quarters, the dough was thin but topped with some Italian spices and had a really nice crunch.  It was filled with slices of ham, spicy cappicola and salami, provolone cheese, chili mayo and large pieces of green olives.  It was one of the best sandwiches I’ve had this year.  The cappicola and chili mayo gave the sandwich a nice heat and played well against the sour green olives and sweet peppers.  Considering I saw several Boar’s Head signs around the deli, I’m assuming that’s where they source their deli meats from.  While the cappicola had a really strong and spicy flavor the ham and salami didn’t really stand out at all to me.  Regardless, all of the other ingredients made it such a great sandwich that I’ve been thinking about it since I ordered it two weeks ago.

On my second trip back I decided to order an Italian Sausage sandwich (pictured above, it was a special so the exact name escapes me), that was topped with both sweet and spicy peppers, Romano and mozzarella cheese, and olive oil on a sesame seed roll.  The sausage itself was very juicy but lacked a really strong flavor.  I was hoping it would be a spicier sausage but instead had more traditional Italian spices.  However, the sweet and spicy peppers, gooey mozzarella cheese and seasoned olive oil were great.  The only other dilemma was this sandwich was really messy and it took some finesse to prevent dripping sub oil all over my shirt.

Considering the amount of business parks in the Northtowns, I should have realized there would be a lot of great lunch spots.  Marco’s wasn’t even on my mind, I was driving around and happened to pass by when I realized it had been on our “to do” list for quite some time.  With a smallish dining room of about 12 tables you run the risk of going for lunch on a busy day and not finding a table.  On Tuesday when my coworker and I visited there was no problem but when I visited on a Friday the place was almost full.

Their menu is much too large to get a grasp on everything, but everything we ordered was fresh and the portions (especially with the Muffaletto) were very generous.  Ideally the meats could have been more flavorful, but the breads and toppings were wonderful and really made the sandwiches something worth going back for.

  1. I love Marcos, but I go to the one on Hertel. Boar’s Head Meats are the best, and I appreciate that Marco doesn’t use the cheap, processed meats that several other delis put on their subs.

  2. That Muffaletta sandwich is some kind of magic. I get one and say to myself “save half for later” but alas I am a true grocery hog and the sandwich makes it impossible to stop eating. Great choice!

Yum! I love this place. I don’t like to eat a lot of meat and this place has some truly great vegetarian options. It is always so good, I am craving it now.
