Food Porn: Mike’s Subs

Whenever we drive somewhere, Alli and myself are always on the look out for a restaurant that just catches our eye.  Living downtown, I’ve passed Mike’s Subs countless times and kept telling myself it looked promising.

Mike’s Subs is located in the heart of Kenmore and I’m sure for many people in the area, it’s a place they go to regularly for take-out.  The building itself has been serving subs since the mid 50′s but the current ownership has been there since 1981.  The small and narrow dining “hall” isn’t that fancy, so this is place isn’t planning on winning over customers by interior design.  To be honest, this place is really a take-out restaurant, there is seating for maybe 10 customers at once (from what we could see) but if you are ordering a sub from Mike’s you are most likely taking it to go.  We grabbed their Groupon deal a week ago and decided now was the time to finally try out some of their food, so we ordered a couple subs and brought them back to our house.  Here’s what we thought….

Quick Info:

We only live about 10 minutes away from Mike’s, so by the time we got back to our house the food was still warm and fresh.  Alli decided to go with a Buffalo staple, a Chicken Finger sub (far bottom) while I ordered their Steak Hoagie Deluxe (below).  My steak hoagie was absolutely loaded with peppers, lettuce and onions; the roll wasn’t toasted (I forgot to ask) so it started to fall apart as I tried eating it.  The entire meal was pretty messy and after a couple bites it went from a hands-on meal to “eating with a fork”.  The steak itself was pretty tender and the cheese was gooey, overall a quality sub.  They really over loaded the sub with lettuce and the pepper to steak ratio was a little high for my liking, but otherwise I was satisfied.

Along with the subs we also decided to order their Pizza Logs and Fries combo (pictured in gallery).  Both of the items were clearly frozen/pre-made; while the pizza logs were fairly standard, the fries were very crispy.  The only complaint would be the size of the serving, in the box were a small handful of the fries (not exactly enough to share with two people).

I wasn’t exactly blown away by how good their subs were, their rolls and steak/chicken fingers are pretty similiar to many other local restaurants.  Their menu is pretty large and has a wide selection of subs, burgers, wraps and even desserts so if you find yourself in the Kenmore area and are in the mood for a sub, I guess I could recommend stopping in for a quick bite to eat.  The prices are affordable and the subs are definitely loaded, so you’ll get your money’s worth.  But is there anything that unique about the place? Aside from their really informative website (where you can even order online), not really.

  1. The best part of Mike’s subs for me is the lettuce. As insignificant as it may be, I love the shredded cross cut lettuce on the subs.
