Food Porn: Five Guys Burgers & Fries

There has been a lot of hype leading up to Five Guys finally opening a location in Buffalo.  I first tried their freshly made, never frozen burgers and hand cut fries back in July of 2010.  I was in Rochester for a concert and I had heard the hype, read the profile of Jerry Murrell in USA Today and was ready to see if a chain restaurant could compete.  Buffalo Eats has gone from a “no chains ever” stance when we first started to a “occasionally if the food is worth it” stance.  Chipotle first showed us that chains don’t necessarily mean bad and Five Guys reinforced it, but those are two rare cases.  Of the 250 restaurants we’ve featured on Buffalo Eats, only 3 are national chains have been featured on the site. (the 3rd being PF Changs which didn’t live up to the hype or the 3 hour wait for a table).  Bottom line, good is good and I would rather drive out to their new Transit location than dine at some of the local places down my street.

It seems like it’s been over a year since we first heard about Five Guys coming to Buffalo, they have had a strong presence in Rochester for a while now so we knew it was only a matter of time before they migrated west down the I-90.  Their Amherst location has only been open for a week and Buffalo has gone a little crazy with excitement for this DC based chain.  There have been reports regarding wait times of 60+ minutes.  Luckily for us we only had to wait about 30 minutes total (10 minutes in line and 20 for the food).

Quick Info:

When you walk into Five Guys you are greeted with some large boxes of peanuts that you can munch on while waiting in line.  With their signature red and white checked walls, Five Guys sort of gives of that “old time diner” type of feel.  A sign on the wall tells you where the potatoes are coming from that day (you’ll pass large bags of potatoes on your way to the counter) and the dining room consists of simple wooden tables in the front of the restaurant and some much needed additional seating in the far back.  It had been over 6 months since I last ate at Five Guys and I forgot about all of their better then average topping options.  Five Guys is known for amazing french fries and never frozen/hand made hamburgers, but for no extra charge you can get options like BBQ sauce, grilled mushrooms, jalapenos or green peppers on top of your burger.

I decided to order a Hamburger (note: their ‘regular’ burgers are actually doubles) with grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and pickles.  For less then 5 dollars I can’t think of a better “fast food” burger in Buffalo.  If you don’t think you can handle two patties, you can order the “Little Hamburger” which is just 1 pattie and is about a dollar less.  Five Guys only uses 80/20 mix of sirloin and chuck and their restaurants don’t have freezers, which means the texture and taste of these burgers are much much better than your standard fast food burger.  The French Fries are also great  Freshly cut fries that still have some skin on them and deep fried in peanut oil, a regular order is big enough for two people to share.  Unfortunately, it wasn’t until after we left that we had read all of the positive comments about their Cajun Fries, the only difference seeming to be a sprinkling of Cajun seasoning after taking them out of the fryer.

There are plenty of local restaurants that serve up great burgers, many of them better then Five Guys by a large margin.  But if you are looking for a cheap/fast/quality burger, I don’t think you’ll find a better option then Five Guys.  If you wait a few weeks when the hype calms down a bit you probably won’t have to wait 20-40 minutes for food (we’ve never waited more then 15 minutes every time we’ve tried Five Guys in other cities).  There will be more locations coming to the Buffalo-area, according to their facebook page the second location will be opening in the Galleria Mall sometime in November.  We don’t say this a lot, but this is a chain that is worth trying out.

You can also order online. My family and I went on the second day and after seeing the line I had my sister order online with her smartphone. Total wait time=8 minutes.
