Food Porn: Vizzi’s

I’ve been dying to try Vizzi’s for a long time, from what I’ve read they serve one of Buffalo’s best burgers.  Located on Kenmore Ave you’d probably drive by this place and not think twice about stopping. Aside from a sign displaying their “Best Burger in Buffalo” award, you’d never assume that their food is anything special.  But you’d be wrong because Vizzi’s is serving some good eats with huge servings and really great prices.

When we visited for dinner on a week day, the place was actually pretty busy.  There wasn’t a bar stool available and it definitely looked like it was full of regulars.  The dining room is pretty simple with tables, simple chairs and advertisements for weekly live music.  The place itself is tiny so I could see a dilemma of waiting for a table on a really busy weekend but we were seated right away.

Quick Info:

My main dilemma, after deciding between Blue Light and Budweiser as their only draft beer options, was whether or not I wanted to order a Burger or a Beef On Weck.  Both have received a lot of praise from bloggers, twitter followers and even members of Buffalo’s press.  Luckily, I was with my Dad and we decided to each order one and split it with each other.  My first bite came from their now infamous burger (pictured below).  For less then $7 you get a 1/2 lbs of beef and a gigantic pile of fresh cut fries.  I ordered the meat to be cooked medium and they did a great job of cooking the beef to my favorite juicy level.  The burger itself had some seasoning but the actual flavor of the meat wasn’t overshadowed.  I can’t say it was the best burger I’ve ever had (I’ve heard Ruzzine’s Rock Bottom Eatery might be a contender for that) but it deserves to have some recognition for being a good choice.  The fries were a little inconsistent, some had been cooked a little longer and had a nice crisp but others were soggy and slightly underdone.

The Beef on Weck (pictured below, $9) was almost comically large; a towering pile of beef in between two rolls  (really just one since the bottom had disintegrated with au jus).  It’s nearly impossible to actually eat this thing with your hands and we had to resort to a fork and knife.  The beef itself was tender but I would have preferred to a little more pink as it was slightly over cooked for my liking.  Otherwise the sandwich was great and it nearly took 3 of us to finish the entire thing.

Alli ordered herself some Chicken Fingers (she’s not a big hamburger fan, pictured in gallery) and my brother order himself the Greek Burger and added Spinach (as per our servers suggestion, pictured in gallery).  They both were served gigantic portions of food, more than half of Alli’s Chicken Finger entree was eaten the next day for lunch.

The place is very low key and a good stop for a late night eat (they are open until midnight on Friday and Saturday) but can be a little intimidating to a first time customer.  Don’t be scared off by the no thrills exterior, our server was very friendly and the food is plentiful and really cheap.  Make sure you bring some cash because this place does not take credit cards, they do however have an ATM.

  1. Wow – did you tell them you were reviewing? That burger looks great.

I love Vizzi’s and go there semi-regularly, but I’ve found that asking for Medium usually gets me Well Done. Brown throughout. Still tasty, but it’s something that’s kept me from reviewing my past several experiences – I want to make one of my favorites sound good! I suppose that’s not very objective of me, but I have a soft spot for this place. Cheap, tasty bar food in massive quantities – can’t beat it for a casual night out.

Anyway – nice review. Pictures look fantastic. I’d recommend the turkey club, if you happen to go back.
