Food Porn: Bertha’s Diner

When a restaurant only takes cash and is open for only a few short hours a day, they better offer some good food to back up the hassle.  We’ve eaten at places that basically turn away customers but in almost all of those cases the food justified the trouble.  When driving down Hertel Ave you could easily drive by Bertha’s and not even realize it.  Hertel is packed with endless dining options, yet it’s the restaurant that sticks out the least that really impressed our dining party for late breakfast/lunch on a Saturday.

Quick Info:

I just recently found out about Bertha’s.  During a “secret” foodie meeting to decide “Best of” winners for a particular Buffalo magazine, I was told that Bertha’s served some of the best breakfast in Buffalo.  Now I’m a fairly new to going out to eat breakfast; I don’t like to wake up that early on the weekend and it’s still no where close to my favorite meal of the day but I’m beginning to enjoy it more and more.  So if there was a place to kick start my love of breakfast, this would be the place.

Bertha’s is tiny and with only a handful of bar stools and maybe a combined 10 tables and booths, there is a good chance you’ll have to wait.  When Alli and I arrived and asked for a table for 4 we were told we needed to wait for the other 2 people to arrive before we could actually sit down.  Eventually we were seated and looked at their “Weekend Specials menu” which had over 10 different offers for that day (you can keep track of Bertha’s breakfast specials on their website).

The specials looked so fantastic that day that we all decided to order off that menu.  I ordered their French Toast Deluxe ($7.75, pictured below) and it was maybe the best French Toast I’ve ever had.  I should make it clear that I’ve maybe had French Toast a total of 10 times in my entire life.   However, if you like your breakfast on the sweet side then this is the entree for you.  Three large pieces of Italian bread had been french-toasted (is that a term? it should be) and maintained that crunch, even with a perfect amount of syrup (with cinnamon) they weren’t soggy.  For this particular special, I had the choice between Bananas or Strawberries and chose Banana’s (well, Alli choose bananas for me). My entree was delicious and I’d recommend it to anyone, but I have to admit that I had a major sugar crash hours later.

Alli and our roommate Jay also ordered off the special menu and they both ordered the same thing, the Backwoods Benedict ($9.75, pictured above and in gallery).  Two buttermilk waffles (yes, I said waffles) topped with sausage patties and two eggs covered with homemade sausage gravy.  Our waitress said it was the most popular special that weekend and I think you can understand why.  Above is maybe the greatest “Food Porn” we’ve ever captured on camera.  Alli and Jay both devoured their orders and really loved it. I had a taste of the sausage gravy and thought it was incredibly savory and somewhat intimidating.  Eating an entire order requires a big appetite.

Right now Brunch specials seem to be the big thing in Buffalo, almost every restaurant on Elmwood is offering something on Sunday.  I’m sure they are fantastic but before you spend $20 per person, check out Bertha’s on Hertel and eat an old fashioned hearty breakfast for probably half the cost (or less).  Yes, their breakfast specials are fantastic but they have a pretty good “regular” menu as well, so I’m sure you will find something to eat.
