Food Porn: R&R BBQ Truck

UPDATE: Since writing this article we’ve tried R&R’s food on several occasions at different festivals and had a completely different experience.  Their food as definitely improved since  and we are in the process of trying to get back to their truck to write an updated review.

It’s hard to talk about R&R BBQ Truck without mentioning their Food Truck cousin, Lloyd.  When I first heard about Lloyd’s Tacos it seemed like everyone on the internet was extremely excited about it and word quickly spread.  That hype didn’t happen for R&R BBQ when they started up, instead I only happened to find out about their existence when they started following me on twitter.  If you follow them on twitter or facebook you will see that they spend a lot of their time making their way around the Southtowns.  But Alli and I went out of our way on a Monday to try them out at Roswell Park (their typical Monday location).

Quick Info:

  • Restaurant Type: Food Truck/Take Out
  • Cuisine: BBQ
  • Price Range: Sandwiches $4, Sides $2.25

Pulled Pork Sandwich

Since I hadn’t heard much about them I was a little in the dark about what their truck would actually be like.  Their menu is pretty simple, 4 options of sandwiches  (all at $4) and several sides (Mac N Cheese, Coleslaw, Chili, etc).  Now due to a shortage of cash on hand, we decided to only try out their Brisket and Pulled Pork sandwiches.  The food was prepared right away and we had completed the entire transaction in under 3 minutes.

The brisket sandwich was actually pulled (I had hoped/thought it would be sliced) and was on a fluffy white bun.  The bottom of the roll was a little soggy (but, keep in mind we had to drive about 5+ minutes back to the house before I could eat it).  That said, I would have enjoyed a toasted bun and the beef itself was unfortunately a little average.  After using some of their BBQ sauce on it the taste improved but on its own I felt like the brisket was a little greasy and nothing outstanding.  Alli’s Pulled Pork was equally unimpressive.

I feel bad being harsh about the quality of the food but we had relatively low expectations going to into the meal and still we were disappointed.  I love the idea of R&R BBQ and I’m really excited that Buffalo has another Food Truck roaming around town (we still need more!).  Is R&R a better lunch option then McDonald’s or any other Fast Food chain? Of course it is and it’s pretty cheap too.  But do they compare to the BBQ restaurants in the area? Not exactly and that’s not saying a lot with only a couple really good places that we can think of (Kentucky Greg’s, Suzy Q’s).  Hopefully we just happened to try them out on an off-day but as of right now I’m not in a rush to go back unless I hear that the food has improved.

  1. Thank you for trying the food. I’m really sorry you didn’t like it. We are a new business and I appreciate all the feedback that we get. This is the first bad review I have read so it’s not pleasant but I will take your opinions into consideration and improve things!! Sometimes the bad criticism is what brings the best out of people so I hope that you will give us another try! We will be coming downtown to main and east huron soon! I will have updates on Facebook and Twitter!

thanks for commenting renee, I totally understand there is an ‘ironing out the kinks’ phase for a lot of new restaurants. I hope you guys keep working towards making a great product. We’ll definitely go for another try in a couple months.
