Food Porn: Lloyd Taco Truck

Last Friday our favorite taco truck Lloyd (check out our Food Porn from August 2010) started serving Fish Tacos, just in time for Lent.  Alli traveled to Main and Mohawk and brought back two tacos (pictured below) and some loaded Nacho’s (topped with their beef) to the house.  Since they started slinging tacos in the summer of 2010, I’ve worked my way down their entire menu and have completely enjoyed every single thing.  Their pork is fantastic, their homemade queso has a great texture and taste, and their Aztec Hot Chocolate would be a huge hit in any coffee shop.

So when I found out a few weeks ago that they guys at Lloyd were going to start serving Fish Tacos, I was thrilled that they would have a new menu item for me to try and probably love.  I’ve never had a fish taco but if there was a place in Buffalo that could pull it off, I knew it would be Lloyd.  Not surprisingly I was very impressed with what I ate.

The Fish is coated in panko and deep fried, I couldn’t figure out what type of fish they were offering but with a really crunchy and thick coating you couldn’t really taste the fish too much anyway.  That is definitely both a plus and minus of this dish.  People who normally are “scared” off by the flavor of fish would love this meal.  But for people who are going out of their way to find a taco that revolves around a strong fish flavor, might be a little disappointed.  I, however, loved it.  Each taco gets two pieces of fish and is covered in their cabbage slaw (like every other taco), a slice of radish, and a delicious spicy/smokey chipotle sauce.  For me, the sauce really made the taco’s stand out.  It reminded me of a spicy mayo and was a perfect creamy compliment to the crunchy panko fried Fish.  These taco’s cost about 25 cents more than their Pork/Chicken/Beef tacos and they are definitely worth it.

We also ordered the loaded Nachos (below) and they were so pretty that I had to post a picture.  I really enjoy their loaded nachos and I normally order the pork (it’s always very tender) which is placed on a bed of chips along with their homemade queso, chimichuri sour cream and pickled red onions.  Alli has slowly been falling in love with their braised beef so we picked that topping this time.  The flavor was, as always, great but if you are planning to eat these standing up or on the run it might be a little difficult.  The beef itself sort-of sticks together and the whole dish is slightly messy so make sure you grab some forks.  For under $6 bucks you will be stuffed after finishing an entire order on your own.

The next Fish Taco offering will be this upcoming Friday (March 18th) because they will be offering a corned beef taco this week for St Patty’s day.  However after seeing the reception online (see Ice and Bites review) I’ll bet they will definitely be making many more appearances on the menu.  Keep up to date by following Lloyd on twitter or facebook.
