Food Porn: Duff’s Famous Wings (Depew)

I don’t think I really need to tell Western New Yorkers that Duff’s makes really good chicken wings, I’m pretty confident thats a given.  From winning a “Food War” challenge to having the President Barack Obama visit, they have definitely made the leap from local favorite to national chow-down spot.  The Depew location has only been open for a couple years, it’s their 3rd WNY franchise from the original Amherst location.  We’ve eaten here before (before President Obama even) but since that trip we haven’t gone back, until last weekend.

So when we decided to indulge ourselves with some fried foods we realized we were long over due for a trip to Duff’s.  This location has the same “sports bar” vibe as their Orchard Park location, with a large bar in the middle of the restaurant that’s surrounded by booths and tables.

Located in a former Ponderosa, Duff’s was packed late on this particular Sunday night.  Even at 8:30 we walked in to a 30 minute wait for a table but Alli spotted two seats at the bar and we decided to eat there and catch the NBA Skills competition.  The bartender greeted us right away, asked if we were going to order food and handed over some menus.  Then she  ignored us for the next 15 minutes.  I’d understand if the bar was packed and she was rushed but at one point she was just standing talking to co workers and washing a Tupperware container.  But sitting at a bar to eat is always dangerous (at least in our dining history) and you are never sure how quick or slow the service will be, so we decided to just play nice and sit and wait.

We ordered our usual combo (the #1: 20 wings, large fry, small pitcher of pop) with our usual sauce, Mild Medium. Once the order was put in we actually didn’t have to wait that long for the food to come out.  The wings came out very crispy, which is normally a good thing but in this particular instance they were almost too crispy.  Cooked any longer they would have been too dry but Alli disagreed and thought they were perfect.  But they were still delicious, which is to be expected any time someone order chicken wings from any Duff’s location.

The location isn’t anything special but the bar was nice with a large TV screen that would be great for watching a sporting event.  They have about 5-6 beers on tap, with their “Duff’s house brew” being the only real unique option.  They also have a wall of arcade games so as if delicious chicken wings weren’t enough to get kids excited, playing video games may put it over the top.  Poor service at the bar aside (it’s bad but not awful) the food is still worth a trip.

Duffs wings are a bit overcooked, but they try to overcome that with massive amounts of sauce. I like Duffs wings, but just as many say about Anchor Bar, there are better wings out there.

The bartenders at the Depew location are hired for their looks more than their bartending abilities. Not saying that some other places don’t do the same thing but I still think it’s a fair criticism. I don’t think Duffs really needs to do that to get customers. Their wings really aren’t cheap so they should at least provide good service throughout the establishment.
