Beer Porn: Ellicottville Chocolate Cherry Bomb

Today we bring you another Beer Porn from our guest author Adam Kern (owner of My Buffalo Shirts).  He’s been writing about beer for a couple weeks now, click here to see all of his previous Beer Porns.

For this beer review I chose a beer from our brewery friends over in ski-country; Ellicottville Brewery Co. Going into the review I’ve had Ellicottville’s Blueberry and their Winter Witte beers, both good beers that you can get anytime of the year. When I saw that Consumers was selling their Chocolate Cherry Bomb on twitter I figured it would be a perfect choice since I wasn’t familiar with it.

I purchased a Growler of this from the Clinton rd. Consumer Beverages for $14.99. (note: they also have it on tap at just about every location)  It’s limited release by Ellicottville and a heavy hitter coming in at 8.2% ABV. The description above the tap and that came along with the Growler stated: A robust Imperial Stout brewed with English hops, chocolate malt, Oregon dark sweet cherries, and Love.

On to the beer review….

Chocolate Cherry Bomb is one of the darkest beers I’ve had to date. It has an excellent dark amber color, so dark that when held up, no light shines through. It also has a respectable rich tan head.

One thing that is evident immediately is the smell of the beer. Unlike, my previous post, Ellicottville’s Chocolate cherry Bomb stout had a delightful strong chocolate smell. This was also noted by the Consumer’s employee when I ordered it saying that it’s an enjoyable beer to pour due to the wonderful smell.  In my opinion, the smell was quite similar to chocolate milk.

At first sip there was a very strong chocolately taste that smoothes out and leaves a slight bitter aftertaste. It had a slight carbonation to it and was a very rich / heavy beer. One thing I was surprised about was the lack of cherry flavor. The name sounds like it would taste like chocolate covered cherries but this was not the case.

Overall Ellicotville’s Chocolate Cherry Bomb was one of the better stouts I’ve had (it’s very close up there next to Flying Bison’s Blackbird Stout). The strong chocolate note gives it a strong recommendation on my end, the only thing lacking is the true cherry flavor. I have yet to go to Ellicotville Brewery, but I am looking forward to a trip there sometime soon.

  1. Everytime I go down to EBC West in Fredonia, I ask for the Chocolate Cherry Bomb. It’s, in my opinion, the best stout that EBC brews and is my favorite from them. It’s too bad it’s a seasonal because it would sell excellently all year round.

  2. This is one of my favorite EBC offerings and always will be. I am excited to try some Blackbird Stout this weekend, I haven’t had it in awhile.
