Food Porn: Jasmine Thai Restaurant

In a couple months I could be looking back at this meal as a critical turning point in out lives; this may have been the moment where Alli and I started loving spicy food.  We’ve never hated spicy food but we’ve never had a craving for it either.  After our meal at Jasmine, with both of our mouths still tingling, we were thinking about how delicious that meal was and what spicy meal we were going to make at home the next night.

After looking up a couple Thai restaurants and debating between Jasmine and Thai Orchid, we followed the advice of our twitter followers and chose Jasmine.  One follower (@selltheair) went so far to recommend a specific dish, which I actually ended up ordering (more on that below).  Now I haven’t had a lot of experience with Thai restaurants, in fact the last one that we wrote about was our trip to The King and I in January of 2010.  But with Alli and I trying to eat healthy so that we can look good for our wedding, we are going to start eating better.  So our first “going out” meal was to Jasmine, here’s how it went…

Walking into Jasmine Thai, the average customer won’t be wowed by it’s interior.  It actually has that ‘Chinese buffet’ type of feeling and decor.  The dining room is not very large but by my count I think there were 20+ tables inside.  So even though I knew what I was going to order for dinner, we decided to start our meal off with an order of their Steamed Dumplings with Pork (pictured below).  The steamed dough was nice and soft, and the pork inside was tender and delicious.  There wasn’t really a strong flavor so I made use of the garlic soy sauce to flavor them up a little bit.  I’m not really a dumpling fanatic but these were pretty good, a nice appetizer for two people to share.

Pad Kee Mow with Shrimp

For our dinners we both decided to try something new.  I ended up ordering the Pad Kee Mow (pictured above, the entry that was recommend) with shrimp as the meat which was delicious.  Pad Kee Mow is basically a stir fry of bamboo shoots, onions, bell peppers, eggs and thick rice noodles covered in a lot of spices.  Our waitress asked me if I wanted it “Hot” or “Very Hot” and luckily I ordered Hot.  After the first couple of bites my mouth was starting to feel the burn and as I ate more and more my tongue and mouth started to numb.  But it was delicious. I’m not sure what exact sauce/seasoning (I think it was a garlic chili paste of some sort) that they put on this dish but everything was delicious.  The pieces of egg were fried to a great crunchy perfection but I wasn’t a huge fan of the of the bamboo shoots and I wished they had replaced some of hem with more shrimp.  Otherwise, I loved this dish and plan on ordering it again in the near future.

Pad Gapow with Chicken

Alli ordered the Pad Gapow with Chicken (pictured above), which was also available as either “Hot” or “Very Hot” and had almost identical ingredients and flavor.  Served with a side of white rice inside of the rice noodles and didn’t have any eggs.  Hers was just as hot and was feeling the numb/tingly effect on her mouth as well.

We really enjoyed our experience at Jasmine Thai and I think I am now converted on eating spicy things.  Literally, the next day  I was dying for something spicy and luckily I had some leftovers from Alli’s plate.  Our service was really fast, we actually were in and out of the restaurant within 30 minutes.  The food came out really fast, our water was filled up before we had to ask, and our servers were constantly checking in to see if we liked our food.  I had read some reviews of really poor service but we only had one minor hiccup in our service, when my credit card was charged they had “ran it” twice.  My bank eventually sorted out the mix up but for about a week I had a double billing on my statement.  It’s frustrating but it wasn’t as horrible as the experiences I had read online.
