Food Porn: Dickie’s Donuts

UPDATE: Sadly this location has closed their doors for good, this was the last Dickie’s Donuts in Buffalo.

If I was a couple years older, my opinion of Dickie’s Donuts would be completely different.  For an older generation, in the past, their locations were THE PLACE to get your donuts.  But with the rise in popularity of Dunkin Donuts, Tim Hortons and Krispy Kreme (for that short period of time); Dickie’s Donuts have started to disappear around Western New York.  However, there is still one location that is still going strong.  In the East Side/Lovejoy area, right off the Dingens exit on the 190 stands a Dickie’s Donuts.

So before our hardcore wedding diet began (were going strong on day 5, wooo), we splurged on a couple donuts.  Here’s how our trip went….

There is definitely a group of regulars who frequent Dickie’s Donuts, mainly middle aged conservative white men who work in a profession that probably involves physical labor.  Now, I usually have no problem with that and totally respect those type of people, hardworking blue collar guys who aren’t afraid to voice their opinions.  However, this visit was a bit of a downer when the talk of “people who buy things from China should be taken out and shot for treason” started.  That’s not a rough summary of what they said, that was an exact quote.

So aside from older men and their discussions of how $5/gallon gas will end the world, we had some pretty damn delicious donuts.  As you can see from our first picture, they have a pretty decent selection too.  They don’t serve up any crazy flavors, the menu is heavy on the classics.  We ordered ourselves 2 donuts each, I tried out their Cruller and the Peanut Stick while Alli tried their regular Glazed and Creme Filled Donut with Chocolate icing.

The Peanut stick was actually pretty awesome, it was clearly fresh and the amount of sugar glaze underneath the pieces of peanuts was amazing and thick.  I think I devoured it within seconds and the Cruller was gone shortly after.  The cruller was just how you’d like it to be, fluffy and airy with a buttery taste as I bit into it.  Alli’s chocolate creme filled donut was extra sweet and sugary and while she saved her glaze for later, warmed up for a bit in the microwave, it was a delicious nighttime treat.

The donuts weren’t groundbreaking ,they were just really good donuts for an awesome price.  For a glass of milk, a hot chocolate and 4 donuts we ended up spending less then 5 dollars.  Sure, you might run into some interesting people inside, but thats why you can go through their drive thru!  Which is extremely convenient for those on the go.  So, next time you are driving into the city to go to your 8-5 job using the 190, get off the first exit and get yourself a delicious donut and a cup of coffee (I’m assuming at least of decent quality).  It will be worth the extra 5-10 minutes added to your commute.
