Food Porn: Joe’s Deli

I’ve probably said this before but Hertel Avenue is still a mysterious and foreign land to me.  Its an area that I don’t travel to that often.  The crazy part is I think the restaurant/bar selection is probably one of the best in Buffalo.  But unless you live off of Hertel, I think it’s always a bit of a hassle to drive there or even attempt to park there.  But restaurants like Joe’s Deli make the trip well worth it.

We first tried Joe’s Deli at the Taste of Buffalo this year after hearing some rave reviews about their Muffaletta (which was one of their offerings at the Taste) from my friend Dino.  I’m not a big deli kind of guy, but this thing was amazing.  It honestly seemed like the meat just melted with every bite, the roll was extra warm and crispy and their olive salad was superb.  So I put Joe’s Deli on my “To Do List” and we kind of forgot about it, that was, until last weekend.

Alli and I actually didn’t perform our usual extensive “pre game Menu study” for this visit.  We knew we were going to order the Muffaletta again, it’s that good, but we didn’t know what else and figured we’d see what they had when we arrived.

I ended up ordering one of their specialty sandwiches, that I can’t remember the name right now (I also don’t see it on their online menu so it may have been a special that day).  It was sliced Pork Loin, Ham, Russian Dressing, Cole Slaw and Freshly Cut Homemade French Fries all on grilled Rye bread.  And it was pretty damn awesome.  It was a sloppy sandwich and it was hard to keep it all together, but every component was fantastic.  Their freshly cut and home made french fries were surprisingly awesome, the bread was grilled so it had an ideal crunch, the coleslaw wasn’t slathered in mayo and the pork loin was delicious.  If someone knows the name of this thing please comment below.

Alli ordered the Muffaletta which is Ham, Salami, Provolone and an Olive Salad on an Italian Roll.  The meat almost melted in my mouth with each bite and I’m not sure if it was the Salami or the Olive Salad but the sandwich had a kick of heat.  The bread was also fresh and tasted fantastic.

Not only was our meal delicious but for under $15 Alli and I got ourselves a filling and cheap dinner too.  I know I’m missing a lot of great food by not visiting Hertel on a more regular basis.  If it wasn’t for my friend and the Taste of Buffalo, I probably would have never went out of my way to try Joe’s Deli out in the first place.  But I’m glad we did and I highly recommend it.

Joe’s deli is so good. I work down the street from it so we eat there at least once a week. the ingredients are so fresh and you are stuffed after one sandwich. I totally recommend the Buffalo Turkey Wrap next time you go!

Don, I’m not trying to be a wiseguy but where do you live that makes Hertel a hassle to visit and park near? I can’t imagine an easier-to-get-to area with more parking. Sure, sometimes you have to walk for a minute or two to get to your destination, but Joe’s has it’s own parking lot. And you can always park in the massive lot behind St. Margaret’s.

I guess it’s not really any more difficult then Elmwood or Allen but I wish there was a quick way to get to Hertel from the thruway unless I’m missing something. I mean now that I live in the city it’s not as big of a hassle but when I lived in the South towns I always felt it was a little weird/round about to get to. Like it was it’s own little island. But in the past when I was trying to park to see a movie at North Park or going out to dinner late on a weekend it seems like that street gets packed and I never know where the parking lots are.

  3. The sandwiches look awesome! Can’t wait to try Joe’s NY Deli, Thanks!

  4. Nice post….!

I am a sucker for fresh-cut french fries. Most importantly, the level of customer service I got on my most recent visit made me give them a shout-out!
