Food Porn: Metzgers Pub

Every other Sunday, I check my local newspaper and re-discover the lovely Clipper Magazine.  If you are not familiar, the Clipper is known for its large selection of coupons to various restaurants around Buffalo.  It’s helped a low budget blog like ourselves visit several restaurants and not go completely broke.  Most notably the Clipper has helped us visit Cinco de Mayo and The Boston Hotel, but there has been one restaurant that I’ve seen in every magazine and for some reason has never really caught my attention, until now.  Two weeks ago, I finally got to visit Metzgers Pub and use their buy one lunch entree get one free (aka $5.00 off your meal) coupon.

Walking into Metzgers for an early lunch on a weekend, we were surrounded by locals (we were also the youngest people there by at least 30 years).  We also were the only people to sit in the dining area (pictured top) which added to the intimidation of walking into a place you’ve never been before.

When going out to eat, you like to find that secret place that not many people know about, but at the same time you don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb-which, I think, is exactly what happened at Metzgers.

I walked into the pub dying to have a big delicious burger, and I ended up with a good substitute.  The Metzger menu is typical to what you would expect from a Pub, lot’s of fried foods and a good selection of sandwiches.  What caught my eye on this day was their Rib Eye Steak Sandwich.  It’s hard to find a pub that offers one that doesn’t have grizzle; for me chewing chunks of fat can totally ruin a sandwich.  However the Rib Eye was a fantastic choice and the flavor in the beef really came out in the sandwich.  Ordered medium, it came back cooked closer to well-done, but luckily that didn’t compromise much of the flavor.  The green peppers on the sandwich were crispy and fresh, an awesome sweetness to compliment the saltiness of the steak.

Alli ordered herself the French Dip.  For those who aren’t familiar with the sandwich that originated in Los Angeles, the french dip is a roast beef sandwich, on top of a crispy, “baguette” style roll that has been dipped in Au jus or (like this one) served it as a side.  While it wasn’t the worst sandwich she’s ever had, it wasn’t the best either.  The bown of Au jus was filled with random fatty chunks of meat and very little juice (see picture, was not very appetizing.  Not a meal she would order again.

Both sandwiches came with some fantastic fries that appeared to have been freshly cut right before serving, along with a slice of cantaloupe if that’s your thing (for Alli and I, not so much).  For being a really slow time of the day, our waitress was good at coming over and making sure that we were all set with our drinks and enjoying our meal.

On a side note, I wasn’t a entirely happy that the only channel on the TVs inside the bar was Fox News.  That isn’t a commentary about my political affiliation, but generally speaking, the news is not something that I love to watch when I’m eating.  Unfortunately it was on every TV in the place, including the larger big screen that was in the dining room.

Would I rush to have another meal at Metzger’s?  Probably not, but if you are in the area and looking for a decent meal that’s relatively cheap, then it’s a good call.  During 4pm to 7pm they have a happy hour with drink specials and a buffet and they also are available as a banquet hall.

It is obvious to me that you never tried the Beef On Weck. Which is the meal to go for there. I loved it so much that I am going back to Metzgers on Thursday. I am driving from Youngstown, Ohio. 3 hour drive and it will be well worth while. I am truly sorry that you did not order the best and that is why you gave the place a medicore rating. They are all locals and they love the place and that one of the reasons that I am returning. True hometown people, put that in your kettle and cook it.
