Food Porn: Zillycakes

UPDATE: Zillycakes has closed since the writing of this article.

I think it is well documented that I love desserts, especially a high quality dessert.  Before I started this website I never was obsessed with sugary treats, but something has happened to me over the course of the last 7 months.  I now love cake’s, ice cream, chocolates, and pies more then ever.  Basically you put anything in front of me that is normally served after a meal AND tell me its bad for me and I will be more then happy to eat it.

The downtown area has a couple good dessert places; specifically on Elmwood even there are several.  Delish, Dolci and Sweet Tooth all have been around for a couple years and all have their upsides.  Zillycakes is a relatively new addition to Elmwood and has a fantastic selection of custom made cakes (check out the wedding book while you’re there), but what really makes them stand out is their cupcake bar.  That’s right, a cupcake bar.

Above is some of the selection of toppings available at the cupcake bar.  You have your choice of frosting (I believe there was roughly 8 different choices), what type of cupcake (Vanilla, Chocolate, Cinnamon, etc) and what candy goodies you want to put on top.  For about 2.99 you can choose whatever combo you have a craving for and they put it all together for you on the spot.  They also serve platters of cupcakes and obviously you can order from their menu something bigger or more elaborate.

Alli ordered herself a basic Chocolate Cupcake with Cream Cheese frosting (the left); I was expecting a much thicker/heavier frosting but the cream cheese was tart and very light and easy to enjoy.  I ordered up a Vanilla Cupcake with Dark Chocolate Ganache frosting and Rainbow Sprinkles; it was amazing.  I didn’t really notice what the cupcake tasted like because I was obsessed with the frosting.  It was incredibly rich, thick and creamy, and just downright delicious.  I highly recommend it… dark chocolate and rainbow sprinkles is maybe my new favorite dessert combination.

They are located on Elmwood right next to the Bidwell Park intersection and just south of JP Bullfeathers.  While their primary business is focused on cupcake platters and cake’s for various events (Wedding, Anniversary, etc), their cupcake bar is a fantastic idea.  So, whenever you have a craving for a cupcake or two, don’t buy the prepackaged deal from tops, head over to Zillycakes and have them make you up a fresh one, and go crazy on the toppings, you deserve it.
