Food Porn: Bar Bill Tavern

Somehow I’ve managed to live in Buffalo my entire life and go without having an amazing Beef on Weck experience.  I never was a huge Roast Beef fan actually; sure I’ve eaten it many times at parties and obviously my Mom has made it for dinner, but it just never was one of my favorite foods.  I understand that Beef on Weck and Buffalo date back way before Chicken Wings were invented.  It was what Buffalo was known for and it seems to be the focus of Anthony Bourdain’s trip here (judging from the clip online).  But for me, the idea of fried chicken covered in butter and hot sauce with a side of Blue Cheese was unquestionably more appetizing then roast beef on a roll covered in salt.  Oh, how wrong I was.

Well, I can officially say that I realize the errors of my ways.  A couple weeks ago I had perhaps the greatest Beef on Weck that I’ve ever had in my entire life at Bar Bill Tavern in the town or East Aurora (easily one of my favorite towns in all of WNY).

Now before I start to gush on how fantastic the beef was and start to list everything else that I love about Bar Bill, I have to begin with some negatives.  For those who are interested in going to Bar Bill for the first time you definitely need to be patient eaters.  Its a small older building (which sort of adds to the small-town charm of East Aurora).  Their seating area is tiny; a total of 6 tables indoors and maybe another 7 out doors on the patio.  And its a fairly popular bar so more often than not there is usually a wait for a table.  We waited almost 30 minutes to sit down but that actually worked out to be in my favor because while waiting at the bar we were right across from the carving station (pictured below).

Sitting at the bar and drinking a Pabst Blue Ribbon while watching an older woman hand carve beef, toast and dip rolls, and custom make each order that came in, suddenly my appetite changed.  Watching this process, that probably hasn’t changed since the Tavern opened, really made my mouth water.  The Beef on Weck comes in three sizes, mini, small, and large, and I opted for the large (as seen below).  There was absolutely nothing wrong about this sandwich, everything was literally made to perfection.  The roll had been toasted just enough to absorb the au jus without becoming a big slimy soaking mess.  The beef (slow roasted and medium rare) was tender and melted in your mouth when you bit in, and the amount of beef (as you can see) was borderline over indulgent but somehow I managed.  I have been writing these Food Porns for more then 5 months now, and honestly this may be one of my favorite meals yet.  (Alli edit: This place as never gotten a bad review and anyone who goes there will tell you the same thing, the best beef on weck and wings in Buffalo. Period.  If you don;t believe me, try it for yourself, you will leave thinking of the next time you can go back.)

Now like all great Buffalo Taverns and Pubs, Bar Bill is also known for cooking up some great wings.  Along with our beef, we had some amazingly crispy Teriyaki wings.  If you are a fan of crispy wings, this is the place for you; they really do a great job in that area.  Not to mention their Teriyaki wing sauce is fantastic if not just a lovely change of pace from my normal medium.  They also have many other great wing sauces including a wonderfully sweet honey butter BBQ, your typical hot/medium/mild/extra hot, as well as cajun and hot pepper.

If you couldn’t tell, I really enjoy going to Bar Bill.  It can be frustrating as hell if you are in a rush (if so, DON’T go), the construction right now in East Aurora is extremely annoying, and sometimes the service is quite slow (to note, most of the “waiters” are also bartenders so they usually are trying to do two things at once).  However, their food outshines these blemishes and then some.  They don’t take credit cards but there is a ATM inside.

Ask anyone whose been there, the food is some of the best around and it is really just an all around cool place to hang out.  If you love Beef on Weck, good crispy wings, or just sitting out on a patio in a really cool town, then there is no reason for you to NOT enjoy Bar Bill.

I’ve been at Bar Bill & the wings and weck are good but not amazing, seems like you haven’t tried weck at many places. The employees post fake comments on message boards hyping the place up.

hah what message boards? there website looks like its an aol homepage from 96′. but you’re right, I haven’t tried many places and I’m sure there are some other great places out there. Thats hopefully what i’ll find after trying some more, but that sandwich was perfect in my opinion. im not sure how it could get better.

  3. Whenever I am in town, I have to make a stop at the Bar Bill. Their beef on weck is something I CRAVE when I am back home in San Diego. Strangely enough, this October I didn’t go to Bar Bill because I tried the Beef on Weck at Charlie the Butcher, and that might have been just as tasty! I highly recommend it, despite the fact that it is inside of a gas station!!
