Food Porn: Mister Pizza

Going forward for the summer of 2009, I am going to try and focus on my 2009: A Food Odyssey List.   I’ve noticed that I can get distracted very easily, and those nights where Alli and I want to go out to eat I should try to look at this list and not go to Pearl Street (where I’ve eaten maybe 20 times).  So when I realized that one of the restaurants on my Food Odyssey list (Mister Pizza) was close to my work and a cheap lunch, the decision was basically made for me.  Now I’ve always seen Mister Pizza on Elmwood, located near the Elmwood landmark ‘We Never Close’, but until a couple weeks ago, I had never tried it.

No one has ever really recommended Mister Pizza to me, and to my knowledge I didn’t think it had that great a reputation…so I was unsure of what my experience would be like.  Even when “living” at Canisius for a couple years, we would generally go get Just Pizza or La Nova’s.  Mister Pizza was always there but we never thought of it as a “must have/go to” pizza place.  After visiting there I still don’t consider it a “must have” location…I won’t go out of my way to get it again; it wasn’t bad but wasn’t amazing either.  I do have to note that our pizza wasn’t cooked fresh and had been sitting in the glass case for at least 30 minutes.  Obviously ordering fresh compared to ‘pizza cooked a half hour ago’ can really change the flavor…but I didn’t have the time (nor does the location have enough seating) to really warrant ordering a full pizza on the spot.

I tried their steak sub pizza (I believe was the name) that had the obvious peppers, steak and onions on it.  The execution was good; the peppers were sweet (along with the cooked onions) and the steak was good in terms of steak on a pizza.  As with the Cheese Pizza that I also got, both were cooked to a good level of crispy-ness and the slices were firm enough that you could hold in your hand to eat.  For Buffalo-ians, the closest comparison would be Just Pizza (although I would rate Just Pizza much better); both typically have a crispier crust with a topping that leans more towards cheese then sauce.  I wasn’t disappointed with my meal by any stretch, the steak sub pizza was probably the best steak pizza I’ve had in a while (though, I’ve only maybe tried a steak pizza at 3 different places to be honest), but overall, not amazing.  But if I am in the area and I am starving for a slice of pizza, I probably would still go to NY Style Pizza.  This wasn’t a huge disappointment like Avenue but nothing worth being claimed as one of the “100 Best Places to Eat in Buffalo“.

  2. Alli Suriani

I have never had Mister Pizza so there is no way I could have ever recommended it to you.

  3. Alli Suriani

Vinny your creepiness is insane even for the internet.

  6. Alli Suriani

i stand corrected. however, i might have been lying to you vinny, bc I have no recollection of ever eating there. also, please delete any aim logs you have of me, its disturbing.

  7. Jillian

HAHA this entry is so creepy. Remember when Lindsay used to call We Never Close to We Never Wear Clothes? I think I had Mr. Pizza once and I much prefer La Nova or Just Pizza. You should do a review of Ying’s pizza and wings if it’s still around haha.

  8. ying’s pizza is one of the most overlooked and disregarded pizzas in buffalo simply because it is “ying’s” and not known for pizza

i actually have ate ying’s pizza more than any other pizza in the past couple years (probably due to the fact it’s open till 4am every day) and i can say it has never disappointed which is rare to find these days.

currently #9 on my pizza list
