Food Porn: Gino & Joe’s Pizza

I love working in Allentown just as much as the next guy.  I love the hippie atmosphere, the culture, and the diversity.  I love being able to walk to great restaurants.  That being said, being able to walk to Gino & Jino’s Pizza for lunch would be a reason to work in the heart of the city.

I was introduced to Gino & Joe’s a couple years ago byt Alli and haven’t had a chance to go back since.  Last week, Matt and I took a trip downtown to the Mainplace Mall in hopes that the Radioshack was still open inside (note to readers: it’s not).  The trip wasn’t a total loss as we got to enjoy some of the best NYC style pizza in Buffalo (I know, I HAVE to try Zetti’s still).  They had probably 12 different styles available and it was a hard to decide which ones I wanted to try.  I ended up having a slice of BBQ Chicken and a slice of their Vegetarian.

The BBQ chicken was fantastic, very tangy and very thin.  I love a good crispy, thin slice of pizza and if you can add chicken with a good BBQ sauce…well then it’s almost perfect.  The vegetarian was great; full of olives, chunks of tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and peppers.

If you are going to be downtown and you’re looking for a great cheap meal, I highly recommend you visit the Mainplace Mall.  Sure there is almost nothing inside worth shopping at (I counted a dollar store and a Foot Locker), and it’s a depressing statement of what use to be a hotbed of downtown activity now turned into a lunch location for local business men.  Hopefully there are better things to come for the Buffalo downtown shopping district.  The mall was at one point something that people would look forward to going to, but for now, it houses one of the best NY style pizza places (surprisingly) to go to in all of Buffalo.

  1. This is one of my favorite places to eat. I just like the gold old plain cheese & pepp. You MUST try the double crust vegetarian. I’m not a fan of veggie pizza, but this is the best. And they make a pretty mean burger there too. There’s a post on my blog.

    Take care – Libby

  2. Excellent review of a pizza place I wasn’t aware of… I don’t even recall being there in that “mall”… and that website (http://www.mainliberty.com/) does a bad job at helping me remember… all it mentions are chess tournaments… I wonder how long this pizza place has been in there because it must hurt being stuck inside a disintegrating retail place

Its been there for a while…it actually has two locations within the “mall” which isnt even a mall anymore sadly. There is one near the main street entrance that you can walk to from outside…which is cool especially in the summer when they have a farmers market right outside….then they also have a second location upstairs in the food court….which, the food court is the only real thing in that mall…its always packed during lunch time with downtown workers.
