Food Porn: Cole’s

I will forever consider Cole’s as one my favorite bars in Buffalo.  Located on the beginning of the “Elmwood Strip”, across from Pano’s and right down from Buff State….it’s really a prime location.  And while finding a parking spot might be a headache, in my opinion they have the best selection of draft beer in Buffalo.  As a bonus, their food is actually really good too.  I’ve had their wings in the past and I remember them being good (side note: I did drink several beers that evening).

Our trip to Cole’s this time coincided with the Kentucky Derby which meant a packed bar and waiting for a table.  Luckily we got to watch the race, and the wait was only about 10 minutes.

Buffalo Egg Rolls

Alli and I started the meal out with a Buffalo Egg Roll, something I’ve never had before.  However it’s exactly what you think it is, a fried Chinese like egg roll, but instead of anything remotely healthy stuffed inside there was: blue cheese, hot sauce and chicken and, for a vaguely healthy touch, carrots and celery as well.  These were amazing, you only get 2 rolls for $8 but they were delicious.  I would consider getting two orders next time for my meal.

We then split an order of medium wings and loaded cheese fries.  The wings were OK, but not as great as I remembered.  The medium sauce was good, but the wings themselves were a little soggy.  If I would have asked for crispier they probably would have been perfect, but that was really the only flaw.  In all fairness, however, they were no different than the wings at any restaurant around town…typical Buffalo style….  The cheese fries were also great, but how hard is it to mess up a cheese fry?  They don’t have the best (I still vote Pearl St for that honor) but we were happy with the meal all together.

If you’ve never been, try out Cole’s and enjoy some of their food….the menu has something for everyone (typical bar and grill type food), and it’s reasonably priced.  They aren’t the cheapest place to drink and if you want a good beer it will cost you $4 at least.  In fact the only time to go there to drink for “cheap” would be Tuesday’s (if you are a lady).  Also be warned, when this place is busy it can be extremely difficult and frustrating to get to the bar.  The actual “bar” area is very narrow (about 3 people deep at most) and the dining area kinda spills into that area and creates a serious log jam.  Also, being so close to Buff State (and Canisius, Medialle, UB South) it is a favorite of college kids, and on a warm night it can be pretty crazy inside.  If you decide to go during those peak hours be patient, but go get yourself a brand new Southern Tier Season brew on tap, it is totally worth it.

  1. glad you mentioned what the actual bar is like… extremely tight and minimal space… they need to knock down the dining area in that section… pointless since they have an entire separate room dedicated for dining and a patio

    agreed.
