Food Porn: La Bella Sicilia

Located on Genesee St. near the galleria mall, La Bella Sicilia is your typical little Italian restaurant.  I really want to like it, I really do.  However every time Alli and I have eaten there we have either had poor service, sat next to the bathroom (I guess someone has to) or had sub-par food.  But this place was a favorite for Alli growing up and it was one of the first places we ate as a couple, and I generally like to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt, so we decided to give it another go.  I like to go somewhere two to three times before I had solidified my opinion.

We went during a busy Saturday evening and only had to wait 5 minutes to be seated, which is one of the nice features….the wait time is usually not that long at all, even on a busy weekend night.  Our table this time was better then previous visits, though, be warned, the inside is usually pretty crowded and the tables are fairly close together.  I also have to give them credit for a really good red sauce, it’s almost as sweet as Chef’s.  But something that definitely has its own unique taste that is worthy of trying.

To start we had their garlic bread with cheese and a side of their tasty sauce.  For something so simple, this is becoming one of my favorite items to order on a menu.  Alli ordered the spaghetti parm.  It was good, very big and filling, but nothing amazing.

"New York" Style

I noticed they had on their menu two different styles of pizza, a “Sicilian” style and a “New York” style.  I decided to get a slice of both and see which one I liked better.  I was a little disappointed though, the Sicilian tasted just like any other pizza, a little thicker then normal but no difference in spices or anything else.  The “New York” style was the same too and the crust was like cardboard.  Very disappointing.  I was a little surprised because Alli used to rave about their pizza when we first met….maybe I happened to get bad slices today….

We didn’t have the greatest meal at La Bella, but it certainly wasn’t the worst I’ve ever had.  Their pasta sauce is good and the prices are very reasonable and they have a pretty large menu.  The service sometimes is a little shotty and, again, it can get a little crowded inside.  And it should be noted that I have had good meals at this restaurant in the past and I’m sure I’ll go back.  If you are ever in the Galleria Mall area and don’t want to eat at a chain, give La Bella a try, why not.

You missed out on the best part of La Bella… their antipasto! I go there just for that. It’s some of the best I’ve had in the area. Also, the lasagna is really good there. It’s known for being a “take out” establishment, so give it a try as take out and see if it changes your mind.
