Food Porn: Taki’s

It has been 6 months since I started working in the downtown Buffalo area and I am already starting to get sick of places.  So finding a place that I haven’t been to (or in this case even heard about) is always exciting.  I’m lucky that I’ve came across another great Buffalo food related blog (Buffalo Food to be exact).  Libby (writer for Buffalo Food) introduced me (with her blog post) to Taki’s a Greek restaurant, located right near the Niagara Circle on Court Street.

She was correct, I could walk right by this place and not realize there is a restaurant inside (the big umbrella in front of the neon sign doesn’t help).  Luckily I had my iPhone handy with its amazing GPS and we found the place, no problem.

When you walk in you’ll notice the location itself it small, with only a handful of tables  and some additional seating upstairs (we requested to sit up there and really enjoyed our view).

The menu (I hope to scan and post on Urbanspoon soon, btw) was filled with breakfast staples: omelet’s, pancakes, egg/sausage combination’s and Greek dishes: pita’s, gyro’s, souvlaki.  I also noticed that the prices were extremely reasonable, nothing on the menu was more then $8.00 and the portions for the prices were phenomenal.  Alli and I both ordered the Chicken Souvlaki Lunch, which is basically a big salad (consisting of cucumbers, feta and Greek dressing) with marinated chicken and French Fries (we got ours Greek-styled) and a grilled pita on the side.  All of that for $7.50.

I would have loved some olives, but the homemade dressing they used was great.  The french fries were literally fried to perfection, they hit that magical zone of being crispy but not burnt.  The amount of dressing/oil and feta they covered them in was a good amount and they weren’t soggy (a key factor in Greek Fries).  The pita’s served on the side were also good.  In retrospect I can’t really say anything bad about the meal, if you’re looking for an authentic Greek Meal I would recommend going to Falafel Bar or Sahara Grill.  But for a “diner” style meal, this was amazing and the price and quantity enforce that point even more.  I wish I worked closer, I would come down for lunch a lot more.

  1. Hey glad you made it over here. I’ve been here a few times. The only real disappointment here for me one time was the rice pudding. It was awful for my taste, but then again I am a dessert snob ;-) And you’re right about those fries – they are darned good! It’s too bad they can’t afford to open up on Saturdays. The traffic downtown on a Saturday just isn’t there as you probably know.

I just had a very sorry greek salad from here. Wilty lettuce, no peppers about a thimble full of feta, tomato’s that looked like they were sitting out and the dressing was basically just oil!
