Food Porn: Allen St Hardware Store Cafe

Long before I became a regular in Allentown, I had read about Hardware.  I became a hardcore “beer snob” in the summer of 2006, while working at Consumers I fell head over heals with good beer.  So when I started to look into what different kinds of beers were at local bars, other then Labatts and Molson on draft, I came across Hardware on Beer Advocate.

Since then I’ve become a little more knowledgeable of where to go for the best beer selection in town (Colter Bay right now has my vote).

Hardware has a pretty decent selection.  So, last week, during what was not my first trip to Hardware, but my first time trying their food, Alli and I decided to grab some dinner.  After taking a recommendation from my friend Dino, we had a great appetizer and tried their panini’s.

To start, I tried out one of the 3 beers they had on tap (large bottle selections, not so big draft selection) Southern Tier’s Heavy Weizen (awesome).  Alli decided to continue her attempt with differnt wines, but didn’t find her winner yet.

Their bread basket ($8) was amazing, with freshly baked breads and some hummus (not my favorite), homemade pesto (really go0d) and olives and an olive tapanade spread.  Honestly, there was so much food that it could have served as a meal alone.

The panini’s were presented wonderfully and, I think, grilled to perfection.  I tried the Chicken with Brie and Roasted Red Peppers, which was a lot better then the Chicken and Brie wrap I had at Merge.  Alli had the Turkey with Smoked Cheddar, Bacon and Tomato which she claimed was “alright”. (Alli edit: I was not impressed…the bread was good and grilled nicely, but there was way too much cheese and not enough taste.  I also was not terribly impressed with their menu, but that’s just me.)

It was a good meal, nothing groundbreaking but all the food was fresh and well prepared.  The entire meal was a little on the pricey side, but that was primarily because of the wine and beer.  Out of all the restaurants in Allentown, I wouldn’t put this one at the top (I would probably put the Steak Sandwich at The Pink still ahead of it).  But if you are going for a relaxing beer for happy hour or grabbing a sandwich for lunch, this place is worth a try.

  1. Man, you did it all wrong! The panini are fine, but you really need to go with the wonderful specials at the Hardware. The gumbo is as good as the best I’ve ever had in New Orleans, the seafood and steaks are mouth-watering. Go back and try again!

I agree with Jim… I love the paninis but the specials (steaks especially) are awesome!
