Food Porn: Chris’ NY Sandwich Co.

While walking to Laughlin’s the other day, I walked by a tiny little sandwich shop (or so I thought, actually it has a huge dining area).  This restaurant is located on the first floor of an apartment building off of Delaware (between Edward and Tupper).  It’s basically hidden in downtown Buffalo, however it has developed a reputation for being an amazing place for lunch (actually voted by Spree as best lunch downtown).

When I walked in the first thing I noticed was about half of the people eating there had suits on, which immediately made me feel cool and grown up at the same time.  Also the waitress staff reminded me of the family from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, not that these women are Greek (I have no idea what they were) but were super friendly, loved talking about menu items and were super outgoing but not in the “I want a great tip” fake way.

The menu is filled with “gourmet sandwiches”, and they do have a wide variety.  Alli got herself a sandwich but she made me look at a salad they had on the menu.  Thank god she did because it was the best salad I have ever eaten.  Ever.

Let’s start with Alli’s meal this time, she kept with her trend (of getting items with blue cheese) and got the Crumbly Bleu Grilled Chicken Breast ($8.50).  The menu describes it as:

Topped with melted crumbly Bleu cheese, roasted red peppers, red leaf lettuce and choice of dressing

I think that adding melted crumbly Bleu cheese can make any dish better, and yes I realize that it furthers the idea that anything that is “buffalo-style” means it has bleu cheese and Frank’s Hot Sauce added to it.  But I am ok with that generalization of Buffalo food, both of those things make almost anything better.

What I got was a delicious salad, 1 part dessert and 1 part chicken finger and 1 part salad.  It was awesome, the waitress even told me that it was her lunch for that day.  It’s called their Panko Chicken, Strawberry & Pecan Salad.

Mesculin greens with sliced strawberries, honey roasted pecans, feta cheese, red onions, manderine oranges tossed in our homemade sweet poppyseed dressing & topped with homemade Panko chicken tenders

UPDATE: We’ve had this salad several times since this meal and we brought along a nicer camera to capture it’s delicious-ness.  Here’s another shot:

The differing flavors were almost overwhelming in my mouth, it was pretty intense.  But it was delicious and for some reason the Panko-ed Chicken Fingers (something I’ve had plenty of times with my Mom’s love of the Panko) worked perfectly with the sweet strawberries and oranges and the sweet poppyseed dressing.

This was one of the best meals I’ve had since I started working downtown, and will go back without a doubt.  The place is deceptively large (seating wise), what appears to be a tiny sandwich shop is actually pretty roomy.  They also have very short hours, only open during the week (Mon-Fri) and only until 3pm but they served us in under 10 minutes, so don’t worry about time.  However if you don’t work in the area, you sadly may never have a chance to visit.

Great place. Thanks for the reminder and the gorgeous photos. I have to share: if you get sequestered during lunch hour while on Erie County jury duty, you get to order from this magical place. The deputies are happy, too, because they get Chris’s also. Bonus: Menus are marked “Jury Menu.”

Easily one of the BEST places to get a sandwich. I think I had a turkey sandwich with brie and cranberries. It was awesome. I lived in Buffalo from 2004-Jan.2009 and miss the Queen City. I tried to go to as many restaurants as possible and my friend and I were going to start a food blog like this but it never got off the ground.

-Canadian that is a Buffalonian at heart

    Here’s another not-so-glowing review.
