Food Porn: Tantalus Restaurant Bar & Cafe (CLOSED)

UPDATE: Tantalus has since closed and will be re-opening under the same ownership as Medici House.

I had the pleasure of re-visiting this fine establishment for another birthday celebration this Saturday.

The nice part about going to a restaurant for a second time is that you have a better understanding of whats to come, the pace becomes a little more familiar.  You aren’t shocked by the menu, you know what’s good there and how much it’s going to cost.  So I was looking forward for Tantalus.

Last time I played it safe, a burger (but still a really good burger, filled with Greek olives, feta, etc) but this time I wanted to step outside the box.  The good and bad of this place (a complete opposite problem then my previous post) is that this place is crazy busy on the weekend.  We had reservations for 7 people for 8pm.  We got there at 8 and had to wait 45 minutes for a table, luckily we got a couple drinks where I got to have a Troegs Pale Ale (turning into my favorite brewery) and a Dogfish Head 90 min IPA (stronger then I remember, good thing I turned down the 120 min).

For the meal,  I went outside my “safety” zone, and ordered something out there:

What you’re looking at there is Tantalus’s Lobster Fra Diavlo, which is basically Spicy Red Sauce with 2 4oz’s Lobster Tails worth of meat, on-top of some Linguine that’s made with Squid Ink.  Yea, that’s right.  Squid Ink.

Now when I read the description I really wasn’t sure what that meant, but wow this was a delicious dish.  First of all, I’m not bad ass and the pasta really didn’t taste that different.  Anyone who has had pasta with spinach or whole wheat pasta, it’s basically the same thing.  It just added a hint of “something”, not really as wild as one would think.

Here is what everyone else had:

Alli got herself the Black and Blue Steak again, which is basically a fillet cut of steak with crumbled blue cheese melted on top.  I know think that melted blue cheese should be put on everything.

Lauren (our wonderful Graphic Designer, check out that new logo) got some crazy Meixcan Pizza thing.  It looked good but I didn’t try it.  Her and her boyfriend Ted highly recommend going to Tantalus on Thursday’s for Mexican Night.  Not sure what that means, but it sounds spicy and tasty.

Ted ended up getting this sandwich, I didn’t get a good look at it but it’s his favorite item on the menu.  So it must be good.  Alli’s brother Dave and her parents all ended up getting steak (steak looks like steak, right?) but at the end of the meal we ended up splitting a delicious slice of chocolate cake:

Aside from the 45 minute wait for a restaurant that we had reservations at, this meal was awesome.  I’m still making my way through the 8 page menu which I’m still not sure if I like or hate.  But the restaurant is really a great spot to eat.  I’m hoping to explore more of the restaurant scene in East Aurora this summer.
