Food Porn: Laughlin’s

This is what the building used to look like.  Now, luckily for new foodies like myself, a lot of the restaurants and bars in the allen/delaware/surrounding areas have gone through a bit of a re-birth/renovation phase….

I couldn’t find a full shot of the place, but you get the idea.  They also welcome our fine Canadian friends apparently.  Always good.

In my effort to expose my current co-workers to a bigger restaurant scene other then Jim’s Steakout and pizza, I am trying to get them to try as many different places as possible.  Allen street is basically done, aside from a gay bar and a wonderful “New Orleans style” little shop (that I love by the way), we have done it all.

So now I have to expand my search (while still trying to maintain “walkable” distance), and on the top of my list was Laughlin’s.  I’ve always passed it on the street and thought that the building just looked cool.  I have friends who have sworn by it, saying it was their favorite place to get a drink so I was excited/nervous to try the food.

Going to a bar to eat can be a complete win or an epic fail.  Some bars take pride in their cuisine and some just have food to make extra cash.  Wow I was wrong about Laughlin’s, this place is more restaurant first, bar second.

The inside I can only describe as a tiny Buffalo Chophouse, or very similar to the upscale lounge Snooty Fox.  The tables and design of the seating area was nice, they had a decent draft beer selection (for example: Great Lake’s Conway Irish Ale) and their menu has a good mix of sandwiches and cheaper lunch items, and high end $25+ steak meals.

I ended up ordering the Philly Cheese Chicken:

Their menu online describes the meal as:

Philly Cheese Chicken with saut peppers, onions and Laughlin’s very secret sauce …. $9.95

The meal was actually pretty sweet, it worked out because I don’t like the way the steak tastes in a Philly Cheese Steak (don’t really know why).  But I love Chicken, so bingo!  The fries, were decent.  I can’t stand ‘home cut fries’, something in me needs a good smaller crispier fry.  To date, Charlie O’Brien’s is the only place in Buffalo that I can enjoy a good thick steak fry.

If you can get past the (minor) fry issue, Laughlin’s is a very sweet place to get a meal.  The inside is gorgeous and the menu is pretty good and the beer selection was above average.  We also had good service too, everything was quick and there was no sitting around waiting.  The only downside is our table had a horrible tilt and i felt like my plates were constantly going to slide off the table.
